Palm Beach

Perhaps the most famous of Sydney's northern , Palm Beach is a stunning tree-lined beach that extends for over 2 kilometers and is Sydney's most northern seaside point. Made famous by local TV show 'Home and Away', Palm Beach is no stranger to tourists. But being 90 minutes from the Sydney CBD, it is still much quieter than the likes of Bondi. Driving here might be convenient if you have sur boards or if you plan to stay for a few days, traffic can make the trip from the CBD much longer than 90 minutes depending on the time of day, so the bus is a good alternative.

The north end of the beach is known for its waves and is a favourite spot for surfers. Both experienced surfers and beginners alike can enjoy Pam Beach, and lessons are offered by a few companies in the area. The south end of the beach is more protected from the currents and so its a better spot for swimmers. There is also an ocean pool nestled into the rocks at the south end if the waves are too rough or you want to do some laps.

If you enjoy a spectacular view, then make sure you walk up to the Barranjoey Lighthouse. Sydney's most northern point, this heritage listed lighthouse has an interesting history of it's own. And at 91 meters above sea level the views are incredible. With 365 degree views: North over Broken Bay, West across Pittwater, the Pacific Ocean to the East and the sprawling suburbs of Sydney to the South, this 1 km walk uphill is definitely worthwhile.

The facilities at the beach are everything you would expect, with toilets, showers, BBQs and a picnic area. Of course the Summer Bay Surf Club made famous by the TV show is worth a visit too for an icecream or a cold drink while you're here. And just across the peninsula, is Pittwater and the delicious Boathouse Palm Beach. Not more than a few minutes walk, this is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat or enjoy some well-earned drinks while you watch the sunset over Pittwater.
