Just a short distance from the Sydney CBD, nestled between Pyrmont, Newtown and Leichardt is Glebe. A few minutes on the bus from town, and just a stone’s throw from the beautiful Sydney University, this little suburb will have you wanting to move here in no time. Come on a Saturday, and in the grounds of the primary school you will find the Glebe Market. Whether you come to shop, for brunch or just to do a little people watching – you will not be disappointed.
One of Sydney’s favourite markets, this place can get busy so it’s best not to drive to avoid the parking hassles. But get the bus here, and take some time to wander through the stalls. You will find a brilliant assortment of everything… Pre-loved clothing, shoes and accessories; up and coming fashion brands; jewellery; gemstones; homemade cosmetics; plants; artworks of all kinds and of course some delicious food. Local artists often rent stalls here alongside start-up businesses so it’s a little different every time, but you will always find passionate and lively people.
With a different music line-up every week, the experience is unique every time. This is a place locals come regularly to catch up, check out what’s new or just to grab a bite and sit on the grass to enjoy the good vibes in the sunshine. A long-time hippie hangout, you will find all kinds of natural remedies, and health foods options here, but equally at home are the stalls selling nachos with the lot and Turkish Gozleme that will have you lining up for seconds.
For some truly unique shopping finds and a wonderfully local experience, you can’t go past a few hours at the Glebe Market. And once you’re done, you can wander along Glebe Point Road to discover just a little more of what this fabulous village-style suburb of Sydney has to offer: book stores where you can drink wine while you browse; antique stores with a twist; and some of the best coffee and cafes in the city. Come here once and you’ll be sure to come back.
